The 10 Stages Of Genocide

Words and language hold incredible power, especially at this pivotal moment in history. For those of us who truly believe in justice, it’s essential that we no longer passively accept the language of white supremacy and colonialism. We must actively work to decolonise our minds, our language, and our actions.

In December 2023, we utilised The 10 Stages of Genocide – developed by Gregory Stanton, the founding president of Genocide Watch – to explain the process by which genocides unfold.

This model highlights why the current situation in Palestine constitutes genocide and emphasises the urgency of advocating for justice and liberation for Palestinians, while holding accountable the responsible Governments for their complicity in aiding and abetting genocide.

1. Classification: Since 2004, when Israel established the separation barriers around Gaza and imposed a blockade on essential resources like food, water and electricity, as well as restrictions by land, sea, and air, it has consistently treated Gazans as separate from the rest of Israel and Palestine. This division has reinforced an “us versus them” mentality and has contributed to ongoing polarisation. In the West Bank, Palestinians face further segregation, as they are prohibited from using specific roads and pathways reserved exclusively for Israelis, leading to a distinctly divided landscape – reinforcing an apartheid system that favours the Israeli occupier over the indigenous people.

2. Symbolisation: Israel enforces a system of systematic discrimination against Palestinians, stripping them of fundamental rights to health care, education, and employment. Through a color-coded ID regime, established and maintained by the Israeli military since 1981, Israel forces Palestinians into a system of control and separation. Those in the occupied West Bank and Gaza are issued restrictive green IDs, denying them freedom of movement, access to work, education, and even basic healthcare. Palestinians in East Jerusalem and within Israel carry blue IDs, but their lives remain under constant surveillance and regulation, marking them as second-class citizens. This ID system is a tool of control, fragmenting Palestinian society and suffocating the rights and freedoms of an entire people.

3. Discrimination: S. Michael Lynk, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) had concluded in 2022, that Israel’s “political system of entrenched rule” in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip “satisfies the prevailing evidentiary standard for the existence of apartheid”. Israel’s brutal and discriminatory governance over Palestinians both within its own borders and in the OPT is a calculated, state-led system of apartheid—a crime under international law. Israeli authorities routinely subject Palestinians to extreme verbal, physical, and psychological abuse, facilitated both by Israeli citizens and the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). Discrimination against Palestinians is not only sanctioned by Israeli law but deeply embedded within it, creating a legal framework that legitimises open, institutionalised cruelty, and dehumanisation. Through this deeply oppressive system, Israel’s actions amount to nothing short of genocide, targeting Palestinians through unrelenting state-sponsored violence and systemic exclusion.

4. Dehumanisation: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant made clear Israel’s intent when he framed their genodal intent as “We are fighting against human animals” while announcing a “complete siege” on Gaza, cutting off essential resources like fuel, food, and water to an already blockaded population. This rhetoric is not isolated; Israeli political, military, and religious figures have frequently referred to Palestinians as “a cancer,” “vermin,” and called openly for their “annihilation.” Calls for mass bombings to wipe out Gaza entirely echo through official and public statements, casting Palestinians as an irredeemable threat, backward, and burdensome. The organisation Law for Palestine has meticulously documented over 500 instances of Israeli leaders inciting violence against Palestinians, reinforcing a systematic pattern of genocidal intent.

5. Organisation: Israel’s intelligence agencies, Mossad and Shin Bet, have established a specialised operations centre and military force, Nili, and deployed elite combat units like the Golani brigades with a mission of deep incursion into Gaza. Since their entry, these forces have carried out wave after wave of documented war crimes, brazenly flaunting their acts on social media platforms like TikTok and Telegram to instill fear. Israel also has a well known Hasbara campaign, solely dedicated to spreading disinformation about Palestinians and stifling criticism by orchestrating coordinated online trolling campaigns that promote pro-Israel narratives and smear pro-Palestinian accounts.

6. Polarisation: Shakuntala Banaji, a media professor and expert on disinformation from the London School of Economics and Political Science, has been closely tracking the flood of misinformation surrounding Israel’s brutal genocidal campaign against Palestine. According to Banaji, the notion of “Pallywood” — the baseless claim that Palestinians stage their own suffering for sympathy — is an attempt to mock and undermine the real, harrowing agony of an entire population. “We don’t need these false accusations,” she states, pointing to the relentless, factual reporting by journalists on the ground, many of whom have paid with their lives. With at least 111 reporters killed in Gaza, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, others continue to risk everything to document Israel’s unrestrained assault.

Misinformation campaigns like “Pallywood” serve to deflect attention from the atrocities and frame the narrative to excuse Israel’s actions. More than 50,000 Gazans — primarily civilians — have been killed since October 7, including a staggering 16,000 children, as reported by Gaza’s health authorities. “The horror is so extreme that some people struggle to believe it.”
But in the case of Israel and Palestine, political agendas fuel this disinformation — an intentional effort to downplay the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Palestine. “Pallywood” is a calculated propaganda tool, devised to question the reality of Gaza’s suffering and mask the true extent of Israel’s devastating campaign of genocide. This manipulation diverts the global gaze from the genocide, desensitising audiences and reframing the narrative to minimise the horrors inflicted upon an entire population. “These events are so horrifying that people almost don’t want to believe them.”
“Pallywood is propaganda. It’s overwhelmingly clear that Gazans are undergoing incredible suffering right now. There’s endless evidence for it, so to make it seem as if people are inflating the suffering helps to tell a different story about what’s actually happening. It makes it seem like less of a humanitarian disaster,” the researcher explains.

7. Preparation: Israel’s actions against Palestinians in Gaza have escalated into a brutal campaign of forced displacement and deadly targeting, amounting to acts of genocide. Civilians are forcibly driven from their homes in Rafah, Northern Gaza, ordered to flee south under threat, only to be bombed en route or struck in so-called “safe zones” like the Mawasi camp, a location supposedly designated for protection. In reality, these “safe zones” are traps, with residents facing violence wherever they seek refuge.
From the outset, Israel, with U.S. support, has openly pursued a policy to push Gazans into the Sinai desert in Egypt, forcing them to “temporarily” abandon their homeland. But the forced exile doesn’t stop there. In secret negotiations, Israel’s coalition has sought to deport Palestinians to nations as distant as Congo, according to reports from Zman Israel, The Times of Israel’s Hebrew sister site.
With 1.9 million Palestinians already displaced and Gaza’s residents cut off from essentials like food and fuel, the humanitarian crisis has become cataclysmic, reducing Gaza to the edge of survival and leaving its population in a state of utter devastation.

8. Persecution: Israeli Genocidal Forces have stolen $250 Million worth of shekels from hospitals, houses, banks & stores in Gaza. Israeli Genodial Forces have been seen parading money, jewellery, musical instruments, ladies underwear and other house hold items stolen from Palestinian homes.

Palestinians have been also been subjected to mass murders whilst trying to escape bombardment via so called safe routes by tanks & snipers, decomposing bodies can still be found on these routes. Images & videos of hundreds men & boys stripped & cuffed in the desert have also been shared on social media, the fates of these civilians are currently unknown.

Mass expulsion from homes and displacement of Palestinians in Gaza: 90% of the population has been forced from their homes. 83% of the homes in Gaza have been destroyed. No building has been left safe, with hospitals, schools, UN buildings, Mosques and Churches all being targeted under false pretexts.

9. Extermination: The oft repeated claim of “surgical strikes” is another lie perpetrated by the Israeli Genocidal Forces who have been using J Dam bunker bombs on whole apartment blocks & refugee tents, annihilating entire family lineages, some families dating back to the time of Jesus peace be upon him. In accordance to international law bunker bombs should only be used on empty buildings or underground bunkers with no civilians present. The use of also dummy bombs which have no guidance and exterminate everything around it as yet another example of the genocidal tactcs being deployed, with countless massacres in refugee camps such as Jabalia & Al Maghazi. We have seen new weaponry & artillery which has never been seen before, often Israel bragging at international trade fairs of how their weapons are battle tested!

Images and videos have been released of Israeli soldiers kidnapping Palestinian men in their thousands. Stripping them and then taking them to unknown locations – the fate of these men & children are unknown but they have not been returned! Videos have also been released of Palestinian men being raped in torture camps set up by the IOF.

Authorities in Gaza have accused Israel of harvesting organs from the bodies of Palestinians it has killed in the Gaza, The Government Media Office said that after examination, bodies that had been returned by Israel showed that their shapes had changed significantly due to the theft of vital organs from the corpses. The Israeli army handed over bodies without the names and also refused to specify where the Palestinians had been detained.

Over 25,000 children have gone MISSING from Gaza, Palestinians have reported IOF of kidnapping – the fate of these children is unknown.

Even in death are Palestinians in Gaza are not left in peace as Israeli excavators dig up graves in the Gaza Strip and steal their bodies!

10. Denial: Netanyahu argued that Israel’s military is “acting as morally as possible” and doing “everything to avoid harming civilians” as it wages an offensive against humanity in Gaza and denies any wrong doing even though there is clear evidence of him & his government members making statements of genocidal intent!

Approximately over 200,000 Palestinians, including women, children and elderly, have been killed since October, according to the Lancet report. It may be over 335,000.

The United Nations has said “there is already clear evidence that war crimes may have been committed” by the Israeli military which they have collected evidence for. The UN also said that Israel may be committing the war crime of collective punishment through its siege of the Gaza territory. The International Committee of the Red Cross agreed. “The instructions issued by the Israeli authorities for the population of Gaza City to immediately leave their homes, coupled with the complete siege, explicitly denying them food, water and electricity are not compatible with international humanitarian law,” it said.

It is your Islamic duty to defend the oppressed Palestinians , you can do this by contacting the @internationalcriminalcourt and The Metropolitan Police submitting your evidence of war crimes & genocidal intent by Israel.

Help prevent further genocide & ethnic cleansing or the complete annihilation of Palestinians in Gaza, it’s time to escalate our actions.

Without justice there can never be peace.
