Netflix removes 19 films from its Palestine content and faced an angry backlash from viewers.

Its explanation, the film’s licensing agreements expired. But during a genocide as Palestinian voices are silenced and dehumanised , it’s more important than ever to hear the stories of Palestinians. In a time when the world wants to listen to the voices of Palestinians, Netflix chose to silence them.

In a time when Palestinians continue to be ethnically cleansed from their land, Netflix chose to digitally cleanse them from our screens.

Recently a contestant on the UK version of Big Brother wore a t shirt featuring a watermelon in the shape of Palestine prompting the Jewish group Campaign against Antisemitism to submit a complaint to Ofcom. The programme took the decision to both digitally edit out the symbol from the contestant’s shirt and physically remove the item of clothing from the house. An apology was issued by programme makers despite the fact that they did nothing wrong.

So are we going to see Muslims do anything other than complain amongst each other about Netflix, or will they do something constructive, complain to Netflix and cancel their subscriptions if our concerns are ignored. Unless they put their money where their mouth is , Muslims cannot expect change.
