On Wednesday a 73-year-old Muslim man was attacked in Birmingham while walking home from evening prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. He was assaulted on his way home from a mosque by three men on York Road in Kings Heath at 11pm.

While the Police have called for calm as investigations continue, this incident isn’t the first of this nature. This incident is eerily similar to another: 10 years ago White Supremacist terrorist Pavlo Lapshyn stabbed and murdered Mohammed Saleem, another Muslim pensioner, outside Green Lane Masjid in Small Heath on his way home.

Similarly, there are echoes of Darren Osborne’s Islamophobic attack in 2017 where he ploughed a van into Muslims gathered outside Finsbury Park Mosque, also after evening prayers in Ramadan.

Are Muslims safe in the UK since Suella Braveman’s xenophobic campaign of hatred? Are we seeing the government’s legitimisation of Islamophobia spilling out on to our streets? Have recent government policies, such as the not-so-independent review of PREVENT, ‘refugees to Rwanda’ policy and anti- refugee rhetoric around refugees on boats (all Islamophobia by-proxy) emboldened Islamophobes?

Islamophobia on the streets or in politics will not stop unless Muslim communities and leaders actively put a stop to it. Our mosques and our imams must get politically organised to challenge these policies. This is the only tangible way we can keep their community safe for generations to come.
