Over the past week, BJP supporters have been instigating riots in Delhi, targeting Muslims, their businesses and mosques.

There are many reports of rioters, armed with crowbars and metal pipes, chanting to “kill the Muslims” and “jai Sri Ram” [a Hindu nationalist slogan].

As of today, 43 Muslims have been killed and thousands have been injured.

Police have been stopping ambulances into Mustafabad to rescue the wounded, and hundreds of injured Muslims have been forced to lay on the floor waiting for help.

The police have said the focus of their investigation into the riots is on local Muslim leaders, but no BJP leaders are being charged.

The BJP is the political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a militant Hindu nationalist paramilitary organisation that has been accused repeatedly of orchestrating attacks on Muslims.

Since they have come to power, lynching of Muslims began, violence has been increasing without consequence and Muslims have been gradually relegated to second-class citizens in their own country.

I am writing to you to express my grave concern at the violence in Delhi, India.

At the time of writing, over 43 people have died and hundreds have been injured in Hindu nationalist-led riots, the worst violence that the region has seen in years.

The mobs, directly incited by BJP politicians, have been attacking Muslims and targeting their homes, businesses, journalists and mosques.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has stoked the fire of this violence with his nationalistic rhetoric and policies.

These anti-Muslim riots are a direct result of protests against the anti-Muslim Citizenship Amendment Bill and other forms of discriminatory policies and propaganda from leaders inside BJP.

There is now increasing evidence that this riot is a pogrom engineered by the government. In particular, a local politician for Mustafabad, the AAP’s Haji Yunis, described how the police ignored his requests for help.

Justice S Muralidhar, a judge in the Delhi high court, openly condemned the actions of the police and government last Wednesday at a hearing into the riots. But by Thursday morning, the judge was transferred to another court and the case was taken from him.

Modi, himself has had history of inciting violence in India, namely in the 2002 Gujurat riots, leaving over 1000 dead, 800 of them were Muslims. There are now many media voices expressing concern that India is slowly walking towards a genocide upon Muslims.

He now acts with impunity, as he is not being held accountable for his neo-Nazi ideology. We need to take decisive steps to change this, or we will be complicit in any further blood being shed.

I am calling on you to take action. I urge you to:

1) Reply back to myself and explain what are your views on the crisis
2) Publicly condemn the BJP government for their anti-Muslim violence, propaganda and policies
3) Create or sign an Early Day Motion for a Parliamentary debate to address the crisis
4) Lobby the Foreign Office to take steps to pressure India to stop its discrimination of Muslims
