In the absence of any real mainstream media coverage, Indians have taken to social media and blogging to raise the profile and documenting what is happening on the ground.

So far it is reported that at least 2 mosques have burnt down, 23 people killed and 189 people have been injured.

There are reports of arson, of groups of men with sticks, iron rods and stones wandering the streets and of Hindus and Muslims facing off.

According to local reports, the mosque was surrounded by angry mobs shouting ultranationalist Indian slogans while placing a “Hanuman flag” on the top of the mosque.

Two Indian journalists were allegedly attacked by a mob when they were reporting about the burning mosque. 

The violence is centered on Muslim-majority neighbourhoods in north-east Delhi – such as Maujpur, Mustafabad, Jaffrabad, and Shiv Vihar – just 18km (11 miles) from the heart of the capital.

Many, including journalists, have tweeted and spoken of mobs demanding to know their religion. At least one photojournalist has said he was asked to remove his pants to prove his identity.

Mustafabad in northeast Delhi is one of the worst affected areas in the violence that has taken place since Sunday, 23 February. Homes and shops belonging to Muslims have been set on fire. Even a school wasn’t spared.

Mustafabad is also one of the seats BJP was extremely bitter about losing in the recent Assembly elections in Delhi.

In response to this, some Muslims, Sikhs, Dalits and others have banded together against the violence, offering places of worship for stay and 

However, the violence is set to continue as it has been linked to a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Kapil Mishra, who had threatened a group of protesters staging a sit-in against the CAA over the weekend, telling them that they would be forcibly evicted once United States (US) President Donald Trump left India.
