In a 75-30 vote with 74 absentees on Thursday, Danish lawmakers approved the law presented by the centre-right governing coalition.

The government said it is not aimed at any religions and does not ban headscarves, turbans or the traditional Jewish skull cap.

MPACUK spokesperson, Catherine Heseltine, said:

“The rational for passes this law is absurd and bizarre. The niqab or burqa does not carry any security risk and time after time, we have seen women out of their own choice wear both.

Not only is this an affront to freedoms of expression and religion, it is the state undermining a woman’s right to dress as she pleases. Let’s be clear, this ban is driven by Islamophobia, misogyny and authoritarianism.”
