PRESS RELEASE: MPACUK Condemns Boris Johnson’s Comments as Racist and Islamophobic

On the 5th August, the former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, published a comment piece in the Daily Telegraph comparing Muslim niqab-wearing women with letterboxes and bank robbers.

He also stated he would refuse to meet a woman wearing niqab as an MP until she decided to take it off. The response from several Labour MPs have been one of outrage and condemnation.

MPACUK spokesperson, Imran Shah, said:

“These remarks are a reminder of how similar Boris Johnson’s views about Muslims are to those of Steve Bannon and Donald Trump.  Like all Islamophobes, it is remarkable that Johnson thinks his own bigotry is somehow more acceptable than Muslim women exercising their own choices and freedoms.

This is reflective of the Tory Party’s Islamophobia problem. At a time when Corbyn’s Labour is being grilled yet again about antisemitism, it is important to understand just how much bigotry inside the ruling party is unchecked by the mainstream media.”
