In Islam, charity is not merely an act of giving but a profound duty of our Deen and a means to purify one’s wealth. The Quran and Hadiths are bursting with teachings that emphasise the importance of charity. It is a divine command that extends beyond alleviating poverty, aiming to uphold justice, peace, and the well-being of humanity at large.

The Quran places immense importance on charity, with numerous verses encouraging us to give generously in the way of Allah. Allah says in the Quran, “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.” (Quran 2:261). This verse beautifully illustrates the reward for those who give in the name of Allah, highlighting that charity does not decrease wealth but instead increases it manifold in both this world and the hereafter.

Furthermore, the Quran specifies the beneficiaries of charity, which includes not just the poor and needy but also those who work in administering the charity, and “in the way of Allah” (Quran 9:60). “In the way of Allah” encompasses a broad range of actions aimed at promoting peace, justice, and well-being, including efforts to protect innocent civilians and combat oppression.

Another profound Hadith states, “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity” (Tirmidhi). This emphasises the protective power of charity, offering solace and shade on the Day of Judgment, a time when every deed will be accounted for.

In the context of the Palestinian genocide, Islam encourages support for organisations that strive to alleviate these hardships. By donating to causes that protect innocent lives and fight against oppression, Muslims are not only fulfilling their zakat (obligatory almsgiving) but are also engaging in a form of jihad (striving) in the way of Allah—striving for peace, justice, and the protection of human dignity.

MPACUK meets the specific condition of zakat by directly addressing the root causes of ethnic cleansing of the Gazans through lobbying Zionist MPs, educating mosques and Islamic institutions, petitioning, organising protests, canvassing and leafletting door to door, and advocating for peace. While providing food and water is essential, tackling the root causes of oppression and injustice is equally crucial to prevent further suffering and genocide.

As we witness the genocide in Gaza, it is our Islamic duty to act. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that, “The best of people are those that bring most benefit to the rest of mankind”. Today, we have the opportunity to be the best among people by supporting causes that strive to protect and save innocent lives.
