24 years ago, over 8,000 Muslim men & boys were mass murdered in Srebrenica by Serbian forces as part of the wider genocide of Bosnians. This was the largest genocide of civilians in Europe since World War II.

Even to this day, more mass graves are being discovered with more victims being identified. This year 33 more Muslims will be laid to rest, 24 years after being murdered.

At the same time, there are Serbs in denial that a genocide happened and are working towards finishing what Milosevic started.

It’s clear, just because it has been nearly 25 years since the Bosnian genocide, does not mean that they are safe. Muslims in the UK and around the world, need to support Bosnia and Herzegovina politically, economically and diplomatically.

Our communities, mosques and Muslim institutions must remember Srebrenica. If we are not, we must ask hard questions and demand that they do.

This is especially the case given the ideas of Islamophobia that enabled the Bosnian genocide, are now commonplace, global and more normalised than ever.

The same ideas of anti-Muslim prejudice we see in the media and in our politicians has very little difference to the propaganda that occurred in the run up to Srebrenica.

Make no mistake, the end result of unchallenged Islamophobia is nothing but the genocide and mass suffering of Muslims. Whether it is in Bosnia, Burma, China, Iraq or here in the West.

It reminds us of the need to always be vigilant against Islamophobia wherever it rises in the world. It reminds us that we must organise and defend Muslims and non-Muslims against it.

If we, as Muslims, do not prioritise politics and the defence of our people this will never be achieved. If we do not organise ourselves, our money and our ideas around this sole critical need, then we will continue to suffer more and more around the world.

We must remember Srebrenica, visibly in public and in our prayers, so that we can remember all of this.
