The blessed month of Ramadan has come to an end and Muslims around the world are celebrating the joyous occasion of Eid.

While we celebrate please spare a thought for our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering; whether it’s from oppression from a brutal dictator, occupation by a foreign power or the victims of Islamophobia in countries like England.

We have countless favours from Allah to be grateful for – from the food on our tables to the roofs over our heads, we live lives that are so comfortable that many of our brothers and sisters around the world can only dream of having the luxuries that we regard as basic rights.

We must show gratitude to Allah for these favours both as individuals and as communities. Showing gratitude is not merely an action of the tongue saying ‘Alhamdulillah’, rather it is action in using these favours in ways that please Allah .

And the actions that please Allah most are those that benefit the people.

We must use whatever freedom and rights we have been given to fight for the freedom and rights for others. If we do not show gratitude, Allah will not only take these blessings away but also humiliate us in this world and the Hereafter.

The Prophet said:

“The most beloved of people according to Allah is he who brings most benefit, and the most beloved of deeds according to Allah the Mighty, the Magnificent, is that you bring happiness to a fellow Muslim, or relieve him of distress, or pay off his debt or stave away hunger from him. It is more beloved to me that I walk with my brother Muslim in his time of need than I stay secluded in the mosque for a month.’ [Tabarani, Hasan]

Throughout Ramadan, MPACUK have been publishing ‘Ramadan through History’ articles about great moments through history that took place in Ramadan – so many of them show that our ancestors never saw Ramadan as a month to shy away from the world, rather they saw it as an opportunity to do more good.

Allah has blessed us with Ramadan, and we must apply the lessons we have learnt about ourselves, and the lessons Allah teaches us in the Qur’an, to continue striving for good (within ourselves and society).

Let us not slacken now that Ramadan has come to an end. Let us be steadfast in the struggle to bring justice and freedom to all those who are downtrodden.
