PRESS RELEASE: MPACUK denounces Angela Merkel’s call to ban the Burqa
The Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK (MPACUK) denounce Angela Merkel’s comment to ban the Burqa “wherever legally possible” in Germany.
On Tuesday 6th December Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Christian Democratic Union, said that the full-face veil is inappropriate and should be “forbidden wherever that is legally possible.”
Commenting, MPACUK spokesman Raza Nadim said:
“Angela Merkel has shown that she is so desperate to get elected that rather than deal with actual issues affecting Germans she is adopting the intolerant language and policies of the far-right.
“Merkel, like many other European leaders, can’t seem to help but take Europe back to a fascist time. Her comments will embolden white supremacists and lead to an increase in intolerance and hate crimes aimed at Muslims. Muslims are only ever political footballs for these politicians, never citizens to be treated with respect and dignity that others are afforded.”
