Black History Month takes place in October in the UK. However, we’re often given a sanitised version of Black history. And it rarely mentions great Black Muslims – which is why we are publishing a list of great Black Muslim men and women that have left their mark on history. We present to you the great Muslim cleric and general, Samori Ture.

Samori Ture, born circa 1830, converted to Islam at an early age and went on to become one of the most powerful anti-colonial leaders in West Africa.

He founded the great Wassoulo/Mandinka Islamic Empire which united many in West Africa and successfuly fought and defeated French colonialists on many occasions.

He was considered to be “the most dangerous antagonist the Europeans have had to deal with”. (Source)
