The pro Palestinian movement is currently facing heavy state repression, so we must defend our democratic right to protest against the misuse of The Public Order Act and anti – terror legislation. We will not allow the police to paint the pro Palestinian movement as violent and anti -semitic as we have seen them do in the last 15 months on X.

What we witnessed at last weekend’s pro Palestinian protest was years of erosion of our civil liberties, politicisation of policing and a continuation of draconian anti protest laws by a Labour government.

It’s time to come together to bring an end to this type of two tier policing. MPACUK ,alongside other organisations are actively collecting eyewitness statements and video evidence to bring a case against the Metropolitan Police’s premeditated attack, but you must play your part too.

Dear Mayor Khan,

I am writing to you as a resident of London who is deeply concerned for the democratic right of people to assemble and demonstrate.

In the past as the Member of Parliament for Tooting, you praised your constituents for their support of Palestine and criticised international decision makers for reneging on their promises to rebuild Gaza.

You wrote that, “The government’s failure to criticise Israel’s incursion is not just a moral failure-it goes directly against Britain’s interests in the world and risks making our citizens less safe as a result. (3)

Clearly, you are aware and fully understand that a clear, strong stance on Israel is necessary for the sake of Palestine, and benefits the UK.

Unfortunately, your recent lacklustre statement on both sides de-escalating  fails to live up to your previous words.

The well-respected British medical journal, the Lancet reports the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians over the last 15 months. Israel’s aggression has been declared a genocide by many experts in the field while the ICJ confirm they have grounds to believe Israel’s actions are a “plausible genocide”. The UK currently stands complicit as they are supplying ammunition in the form of F16 parts, quad drones and parts for drones (5).

As you will be aware it is a criminal offence in the UK to fund genocide or war crimes.

As British citizens who have no desire to be complicit in a genocide, we have a right to protest against the horrors visited on Gaza by Israel over the past 15 months.

The behaviour of the Metropolitan Police at last weekend’s protest (18th January 2025) was nothing short of scandalous, attacking peaceful protesters including a monk.

It has left the pro Palestinian community feeling extremely vulnerable and at risk of further harm and dehumanisation by your police force. The behaviour of the Metropolitan Police force was an attack on our freedom and our right to assemble and protest.

If you refuse to stand on the right side of justice, I can only say I have lost faith in you as a protector of human rights. In the future, I will save my vote for a mayoral candidate who will stand up for the oppressed people of Palestine.
