If the ongoing genocide in Gaza wasn’t enough to highlight the double standard, the continual developments across the West Bank and Lebanon, where Israel is systematically violating international law with little to no international pushback, should be.

The West Bank has been the target of illegal Israeli settler expansion and state-backed military oppression. However, recent escalations have taken the violence to a new level. In blatant defiance of international law, Israel continues its occupation of Palestinian territories, demolishing homes, displacing communities and imposing a brutal military regime over millions of Palestinians. UN resolutions that call for the protection of civilians are routinely ignored as Israeli forces expand their illegal settlements and subject Palestinians to what can only be described as genocidal conditions.

Mass arrests, assassinations and the destruction of vital infrastructure in the West Bank aren’t just daily occurrences—they are part of a coordinated campaign to erase Palestinian existence from the map. This ongoing ethnic cleansing violates countless international agreements, including the Geneva Conventions, yet the calls for Israel to be held accountable remain toothless.

The atrocities aren’t limited to the West Bank and Gaza. Lebanon, a country that has been scarred by its own share of wars and Israeli incursions, is now facing renewed attacks. The most recent spate of violence includes the deployment of pager and mobile bombs, orchestrated by Israeli forces. These devices, planted in border towns, are yet another form of not only physical but psychological warfare designed to instill fear among civilians and provoke Hezbollah into retaliatory action.
The hypocrisy becomes stark when international actors, particularly the U.S. and Europe, issue warnings to Lebanon, Hezbollah and Iran about not escalating tensions. Yet, when Israel deploys such bombs or breaches Lebanese airspace and sovereignty, the global outcry is suspiciously absent. Essential services—food, water, electricity, and medical supplies—are choked off, creating an unlivable situation for the 2 million Palestinians trapped within its borders.

The world’s focus has largely moved on, leaving Gazans to endure one of the most brutal forms of collective punishment in modern history. Hospitals are running out of supplies, and children are growing up knowing nothing but war and deprivation. But since it’s a slow, grinding form of violence, it fails to attract the headlines and outrage that it deserves. The global community, once again, looks the other way.

The hypocrisy of the “do not escalate tensions” rhetoric is painfully clear. It is a preemptive warning to Palestinians, Lebanese and anyone else in the region daring to resist Israeli aggression: don’t fight back, don’t retaliate and don’t expect the world to care if your communities are destroyed. It’s a carte blanche for Israel to continue its systematic dismantling of Palestinian life, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for future escalations with its neighbours.

In this context, the notion of de-escalation becomes a farce. It is not a call for peace or dialogue, but a shield for Israeli impunity. The narrative privileges Israeli security concerns while dismissing the legitimate grievances of the Palestinian people, Lebanese civilians and even global justice movements that see this for what it is: an ongoing colonial project backed by military might and shielded by diplomatic inertia.

What is happening in the West Bank, Gaza and now Lebanon is not merely an escalation of violence; it is the natural consequence of years of international inaction. The message from world powers is clear: Israel can do as it pleases, and the rest of the region is expected to accept it.

As bombs fall in Lebanon, as homes are demolished in the West Bank and as Gaza is suffocated, the international community’s silence only deepens the complicity. The plea to “not escalate tensions” has become a hollow mantra, one that allows for the perpetuation of violence against the Palestinian people and their neighbors without accountability. The world must wake up to this reality before it’s too late, or risk being forever on the wrong side of history.
