I’ve been following some of the discourse on social media amongst London Muslims, regarding who they’re considering on giving their London Mayoral vote to; and it is worrying that some seem set on voting for Sadiq Khan, for reasons that frankly don’t make any sense.

Yes, Sadiq Khan may be the Labour candidate for the London Mayoral Elections, but it doesn’t matter what party he belongs to, what his religion/skin colour/sexual orientation/gender/favourite football team/favourite food or eye colour is.

The only thing that matters is what he stands for.

And a quick look at Khan’s recent comments show he stands for Israel.

Khan told the JC that he would not use the London Mayor position as “a pulpit for foreign policy”, but his campaign has been keen to promote his pro-Israel credentials.

From his opposition to the BDS campaign (which has had a significant impact on Israel), to his lack of comments about Palestine in Parliament (he has never mentioned the word Palestine).

He did however, manage to mention Gaza – in the context of anti-Semitism, and with comments describing the use of the word ‘Zio’ as “a racist term against Jewish people”, Khan has really upped his love-in with Israel in the lead up to the Mayoral Elections.

There was a time when Sadiq Khan was prepared to criticise Israel for its unethical actions, but he’s not letting childish things like ethics get in the way of his bid to be Mayor of London.

The reality is that Sadiq Khan’s comments about Israel do not represent the views of millions of British people who are pro-Palestinian & anti-apartheid.

If you vote for Sadiq Khan you are approving of his pro-Israel comments – which he feels comfortable in making because he doesn’t think he has to work for the Muslim vote (because he thinks the majority of you are going to blindly vote for him just because he’s Muslim and/or Labour).

Unless Muslims hold Khan to account, he will continue to show his support for the apartheid state of Israel.

We deserve an ethical mayor – and unless we pressure Khan to take an ethical stance on issues that matter to us, a vote for Sadiq Khan on Thursday 5th  May will be a vote for Israel.
